Leaving Johns Hopkins
If your employment with Johns Hopkins Health System ends, review the information on this page to know which benefits will end and when. You can continue some benefits through COBRA or by contacting the vendor directly to set up an individual policy.
Make sure your current address, telephone number and personal email are up-to-date so you can receive your W2, final paycheck, and COBRA notice. Confirm or update your personal information on Employee Self Service (ESS) or call Shared Services at 443-997-5828, option #3.

Any unused accrued PTO is paid out at 50% on your final paycheck if you worked for at least 90 days.
Retirement account
You’re always 100% vested in your contributions. You’ll only keep matching contributions from John Hopkins that have vested. Go to the Retirement page to view the vest schedule.

Benefits that end the last day of the month
- Medical and prescription drug insurance
- Dental insurance
- Vision insurance
Any remaining deductions will be taken from your final paycheck. Deductions for medical, dental, and vision insurance will be collected from your final paycheck in the month in which you terminate. These deductions may be more than your normal biweekly deductions so coverage remains active through the end of the month.
You can continue this coverage for you and your dependents through COBRA. View “Continuing health care coverage through COBRA” below for more information.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
If your employment ends, FSA accounts and the payment card are terminated on the last day of employment. Only claims incurred before your last day of employment will be processed for reimbursement. All claims must be submitted within 90 days of employment end date.
Tuition assistance
If you need to pay back your tuition assistance, contact the HR Support Center at 443-997-5400 or hrsc@jhmi.edu.
Continuing health insurance through COBRA
You can continue your Johns Hopkins medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents through COBRA. View the COBRA rates chart below.
Health Equity Wage Works Services will mail COBRA information to your home address within 14 days of being notified of your termination.
